William ‘Billy’ Counter

IRON MOUNTAIN — With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Billy Counter, a father, brother, son and friend, who left us on Aug. 9, 2024, at the age of 65.

Born on May 2, 1959, Bill grew up in Aurora, Wis. with his four siblings: Laurie, Jim, Mike and Lisa. He attended Florence High School, graduating in the class of 1977. From a young age, Bill became known for his natural talents and athleticism — holding a record in basketball as one of 12 in the 1,000 point club at Florence High School.

His true passion, the guitar, was his instrument of choice starting at just nine years of age. It wasn’t long after that Bill began playing in bands with his brothers and family friends (The New Breed, Miles Sparx, Riley Road) continuing on through the majority of his life playing with many talented musicians in the area.

Bill had recently moved to Colorado Springs, Colo. to be with his daughter (Brianne), enjoying the five months he was given, by her side.

Bill is survived by his mother, Kathy Counter; father, William Counter; son, Josh (Cecily) Counter; daughter, Brianne Counter; and siblings, Laurie Counter, Jim Counter, Mike (Mary) Counter and Lisa Counter. Among his immediate family, Bill is also survived by many close extended family members.

Though our hearts are heavy with grief, we take solace in the knowledge that Bill is now at peace, his spirit with those whom passed before and forever intertwined with those he left and loved so dearly. He will live on through the songs he played, the jokes he told, and the love he had for so many.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, Aug. 24 from 1 to 9 p.m. at City Park in Iron Mountain

Rest in peace, dear Billy. May your music continue to play in our hearts, and your memory be a melody that never fades.
