David Moyes lays down marker for West Ham stars as he prepares summer transfer plan

The Scot could do former club Everton a massive favour by beating Leicester in their final Premier League game of the season on Sunday as the Hammers look to the Europa Conference League final against Fiorentina

David Moyes is glad to be on the other side of Sunday's relegation nail-biter at Leicester after West Ham dragged themselves "through a hedge backwards" to secure safety with three games to spare.

But the Scot insists there is no chance of his players putting their feet up as they look to take their last chance to impress before the Europa League Conference final on June 7.

Moyes could do former club Everton a favour by sending the Foxes down with a win and potentially climb two places in the table to finish above Chelsea - which would be worth more than £4m in prize money.

But preparing for the clash against Fiorentina in Prague is the chief concern for a club that last won a major trophy in 1980.

He said: "I'm glad it's not us in the situation but we have to go and do our job to get another win and try and finish a bit higher up the league. It would be important for us.

"If you’d given me this position a few weeks ago I’d have snapped your hand off because we go into the last day without any real problems and more importantly we go into it knowing we’ve got a cup final in a week or so's time. We need to get everyone in the right condition for that."

Moyes believes supporters would have accepted mid-table and a European final at the beginning of the campaign but concedes their domestic results have made it less comfortable than anticipated.

"I think they probably would have," he said. "But we've had to drag ourselves through a hedge backwards to get to this point. We might not have liked or enjoyed that part of the journey but I think if you get to the finish line the way it is I think that would be OK."

The easing of relegation fears has also enabled Moyes to begin putting recruitment plans in place for next season but he joked that trees will be sacrificed to write out all the names falsely linked with a move to East London.

Captain Declan Rice is set for a blockbuster switch to a Champions League contender, with Arsenal leading the race, and that will leave West Ham in need of midfield reinforcements.

While Moyes is fed up with repeated questions about his star man and coy on potential targets, he admits that he will aim to bring in players with Premier League experience rather than looking for value abroad.

"I’d like to add a little bit more British players or homegrown players if we possibly could," Moyes said. "But I wouldn't set out to take one of them if I saw something better or I thought there was a better alternative.

"I don't see us being huge spenders, maybe. Where we can and where we need to add to the squad, then we will do so."

West Ham are considering whether to bring in a director of football this summer but Moyes added: "I’m yet to have a conversation with [chairman] David Sullivan about it."
