Police honor the fallen, historic train station gets new marker: Jackson headlines May 6

JACKSON, MI – Law enforcement officials from throughout Jackson County gathered in downtown Jackson Wednesday to remember and honor those who have been lost in the line of duty.

Jackson County police honor fallen officers at annual memorial

The annual Jackson Law Enforcement Memorial drew dozens to Horace Blackman Park Wednesday to pay tribute to law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.

Sgt. Mark Miller from the Michigan State Police Jackson Post began the May 10 event by recalling his long career in law enforcement. On the same date and time 25 years ago, Millar stood on the steps of the MSP training academy wondering what he had gotten himself into.

150-year-old Jackson train station being honored with new historical markers

Jackson's historic train station is being recognized for its long history and contributions to the Underground Railroad.

The Jackson County Michigan Historical Society is unveiling two State of Michigan historical markers during a ceremony from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 13, at train station at 501 E. Michigan Ave. The markers will celebrate the rich history of the depot, which remains as the oldest continually operating passenger rail station in the United States.

Jackson County man killed by falling tree

A Parma Township man died from injuries caused by a falling tree Tuesday morning, police said.

At about 9:38 a.m. May 9, deputies from the Jackson County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to the area of Brown Road in Parma Township -- western Jackson County -- for the report of a death.

Recommendation made for interim clerk to avoid shutdown of Jackson County township

A special outside committee created to help the Rives Township Board of Trustees decide who should take over the seat of its resigning clerk has made its recommendation.

The committee reached a unanimous decision Wednesday, May 10, that Janet Hayward is the most qualified person to become interim clerk in Rives Township, when current clerk Judith McCord leaves on May 15, special committee member and Jackson County Commissioner Corey Kennedy said.

Reduced smells, increased efficiency goals of $11M improvement to township water plant

Operations at the Clean Water Plant in Leoni Township are running smoother and smelling better after the completion of a multi-million-dollar improvement project.

Township officials were on scene at the plant, located at 8401 Page Ave., for a dedication ceremony Wednesday, May 10, now that the $11.8 million project has been completed and the plant is fully online.

Jackson man arrested after pointing gun at officer, barricading himself in weekend standoff

A man accused of assault was arrested Saturday after a prolonged standoff with police.

At about 1:22 p.m. on May 6, officers from the Blackman-Leoni Department of Public Safety responded to a report of a man assaulting his father in the 4000 block of Lansing Avenue, north of Jackson.

Water rate increase proposed for Jackson's 2024 budget

A planned hike in Jackson's water rate in the proposed 2023/24 budget was a point of contention with city residents and officials during a public hearing Tuesday night.

The Jackson City Council hosted a mandatory public hearing during its council meeting Tuesday, May 9, about the proposed budget for the next fiscal year set to begin July 1.

Man arrested in drive-by shooting near Western High School

A search warrant led to the arrest of three people Tuesday afternoon, including at least one man police believe was involved in a shooting that injured a bystander.

At about 1:27 p.m. May 9, deputies from the Jackson County Sheriff's Office arrested three people during the search of a residence in the 500 block of West Trail Street in Jackson.

The animal shelter is hosting its second annual Bark & Brew from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 20, at the Jackson County Fairgrounds/Keeley Park, 200 W. Ganson St. The event raises money for the shelter's emergency medical fund.

‘Let's go Brandon’ flag raising was senior prank, Hanover-Horton superintendent says

A flag waving in front of Hanover-Horton High School on Monday with the slogan "Let's go Brandon" was not a political statement from the school, but a prank played by the senior class, Superintendent John Denney said.

The attention-grabbing flag was one of several that members of the senior class raised on light polls outside the high school Monday morning, May 8, Denney said. Another six or seven flags with identical "Senior Class of 2023″ messages were raised, he said.
